Rookie Mistakes Job Seekers Make when applying for a role

Job search mistakes can be easy to make. You’re excited about your new career, and you want to get the job you deserve. There are a lot of mistakes that job seekers make when they’re applying for jobs. You probably know what they are—you’ve made them yourself, and you’ve seen other people make them. They’re the kind of mistakes that can be avoided with a little forethought and planning. But it’s important to know what mistakes you’re making so you can avoid them in the future.

    •  Not researching the company or industry

This may seem obvious, but if you don’t know who you’re applying to work for, it’s going to be hard for you to know if it is the right place for you. Make sure you understand what kind of company or industry your target company is in, and how they fit into the larger picture. Make sure you do your research and know the company’s mission, values, and what they’re looking for in a candidate. Thoroughly search their website and socials and know their company culture, the kind of employees, what they post or talk about. This will give you an upper hand when they ask questions related to the company or to what you can contribute to the company.

    •  Sending an unprofessional email address

Your email address is one of the first things recruiters see when they get your resume. If it’s something like [email protected], they might not even bother looking at your resume because they think you’re unprofessional! So make sure your email address looks professional and polished—it’s one of the easiest ways to stand out from other applicants. If you’re super serious about your job search then perhaps it may be worthwhile creating a specific email address for your job search so you never miss an update, and don’t confuse professional emails with personal.

    • Not customizing your documents

Another mistake is not tailoring your resume and cover letter to the specific job you’re applying for. Generic applications are often immediately rejected. Take the time to customize your materials to each position you’re interested in to increase your chances of being called in for an interview. Also, If you apply for multiple jobs at once using one document, it can be hard for recruiters to tell which position would be best suited for you. It’s better to have multiple documents—one for each position—and submit them separately. That way recruiters can look at each individually and decide which one suits your needs better than any other.

    • Showing desperation

Another common error is coming across as desperate or needy during the interview process. Be confident in your skills and experience, and don’t be afraid to sell yourself. Show the interviewer why you’re the best candidate for the job and that you’re excited about the opportunity to join their team, but don’t jump to the first offer especially if it’s lower than what you originally wanted.

    • Not paying attention to detail.

It’s easy to miss something when you’re applying for a job. But if you don’t take care to fill out the forms correctly, or if your resume is missing important information, that could be the reason you are not invited for an interview. So make sure that every form is filled out completely with all the necessary information and no typos! If you are dyslexia and you may have typos, state this on your application so you.

    •  Not following up after submitting your application materials.

Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of following up after the interview. Send a thank-you note to the interviewer, expressing your continued interest in the position. This will help you stay top of mind as the hiring manager makes their final decision. One of the most important parts of getting a job is following up after submitting an application packet or resume submission
